This is a continuing list of waypoints. Many of these positions have been collected from existing publications. Many have been personally verified by GPS. This list will evolve as we continue to collect verified GPS positions from on site. Please collect and forward any verified waypoints to PINNIPED for future inclusion in the list. ALWAYS USE ALL POSITIONS WITH EXTREME CAUTION. This list has been designed to be a working companion to the NOAA, DMA and British Admiralty charts and the regular cruising guides such as Charlies Charts(c) and the Earl Hines Landfalls of Paradise (c). In these days of satellite navigation, the existing, older charts have been found to be as much as several miles off in some places. This waypoint list is designed to fill in the gaps. It will assist you in route planning. Many of the positions have come from the US Sailing Directions Pilot Books Pinniped assumes no liability for the use of these positions. Errors have been found and have always been corrected in following editions when detected. Corrections and additions are not indicated in following editions, so always use the most current dated edition available. Use these waypoints with appropriate care and caution. Never use only one navigation tool. GPS, Radar, the Depth Sounder and Common Sense all play appropriate roles in safe navigation. It should be noted that the waypoints are listed into general island groups or specific types of hazards. The groups are in navigation order from Mexico until the Societies, then in alphabetical listing by island group names. Some groups, where indicated, are in general navigation order, others are in alphabetical order. Ò " indicates Port of Entry.
Waypoints listed and types needed are as follows;
Aero Beacon As listed in the Light List. Indicates an airport.
Anchorage Exact location of the boat while safely anchored.
HAZARD The EXACT location, if possible, of rocks or reefs to allow navigation around.
Island A general position of an island as reported in the Pilot.
Light As listed in the Light List. Would indicate actual position.
Landfall Similar to Passage, a preliminary destination.
Passage Waypoint to safely route you past a point or approaching a harbor.
Reef Pass The entrance to a reef passage. Exact loction is critical.

ATLAS Weather Moorings in mid ocean across the South Pacific as of January 1992 These orange & white automated weather buoys are 6Õ across, 8Õ tall, weigh 500 lbs and are reported to be unlighted. They are reported to be equipped with radar reflectors. They range across the equatorial Pacific Ocean between 10 degrees North and South latitudes. Positions indicated below may be as much as 1 nautical mile in error. NOAA recommends at least a 6 nautical mile clearance for safety. They are grouped by longitude, then north to south. The positions in Bold Type are closest to the rhumb line route from Mexico to the Marquesas. List, in part, from Alan Spears.

New Zealand Approach from the North Proceedure for Opua arrival
As you approach New Zealand, contact ÒRussell Radio" on SSB 4.445 Mhz at 0715 New Zealand time or at 1900 New Zealand time. Russell Radio will contact New Zealand Customs Service for you to coordinate your check-in in Opua. As you near the Bay of Islands, Russell Radio can be reached via a VHF repeater on VHF ch 16. Bay of Islands App. 35°08.900S 174°11.100E Landfall Go 213°T into the bay Wide open and easy entrance. Proceed 6.62 NM @ 213° T to Frazer Point Light waypoint Frazer Rock light 35°14.400S 174°06.600E Fl W Light .3 mile off the point Turn here for Veronica Channel. Proceed 1.54NM @ 192°T Bow lookout recomended from this point onward at night. Call ÒNew Zealand Customs" on VHF Ch16 at this time, if during daylight. Veronica Channel 35°15.900S 174°06.200E Lights 1&2 Fl Red 3 sec. @192°T then continue through... Middle of Channel 35°16.653S 174°06.314E Lights 3&4 go 192°T Proceed into Veronica Channel and watch for range lights on hill ahead of you upon entering Veronica channel. Veronica range lights are a steady vertical red flourescent light above a flashing white light above a flashing 2.5 sec green light at the water. Line up all three lights. Proceed until near lower green range light and... Turn for Opua at 35°17.950S 174°06.500E Go 174°T This is right near the base of the Veronica range lights. Look left for the Opua range lights and turn 174°T for Opua Warf. Opua Range 35°18.000S 174°06.460E Red light Go 174°T The Opua range light is a steady vertical red flourescent over flashing 2.5 sec white light. There are moored boats on both sides of channel as you approach Opua. Use extreem caution at night from here onward since most boats show no anchor lights. There is ferry traffic during the day crossing the channel. Opua Warf 35°18.800S 174°07.200E Warf Go 143°T off channel
Turn right BEFORE reaching range marker to go through the moored boats to the warf from the channel. Warf is well lit at nigh 1t. If after hours, pick up a GREEN bouy near warf and wait for Customs to call you in the morning after 0800 on VHF Ch.16. Regular moorings are orange or yellow. Check-in is alongside the small floating drydock lifter for yachts at the warfor at the floating dock at the seaward end of the warf marked ÒCUSTOMS". Customs Service will direct you where and when they wish you to come along side for check-in. Contact ÒRussell Radio" on VHF Ch16 for further information and assistance.
